27 | Camborne Trevithick Day is a one day street festival of free entertainment to celebrate Camborne’s Mining and Industrial Heritage and is named after our most famous son Richard Trevithick. Who was Trevithick? Richard Trevithick (1779-1830) was a mine captain and engineer, a prolific inventor, and is recognised as the ‘father of the locomotive’. In 1801 he ran a ‘road locomotive’ in the streets of Camborne. A full sized replica of this engine can be viewed on Trevithick Day. What happens on Trevithick Day? Trevithick Day is a social event which embraces diversity. The main streets of Camborne are closedJ to traffic. Streets are lined with stalls. There are 4 main covered entertainment stages, with other street entertainment throughout the town. Fairground rides are in the town centre car park. There are displays of Old Vehicles. Stationary Engines, full size Steam Engines. Every available Hall has some sort of attraction e.g. a Flower Show, arts & crafts, model exhibition, schools competition, plus sales of refreshments. In the morning 300+ local schoolchildren, dressed in costume, take part in the Bal Maidens and Miners Dance, led by miniature steam engines. In the afternoon there is ‘Trevithick’s Dance, led by a full size steam engine. Both dances are accompanied by Camborne Town Band, playing the specially arranged ‘Trevithick’s Tune’. The climax of the day is a unique parade of Steam Engines that winds its way up the main street through the festivities. Saturday 27th April 2019 When is it held? What time is it? How long has it been going? Camborne Trevithick Day is always held on the last Saturday in April. Street stalls begin trading at 9am, street entertainment begins at 10am. The Event finishes at 5pm. The first Camborne Trevithick Day was held in April 1984. # Park & Ride, is signed from the A30 It is difficult to estimate accurately how many visitors there are due to the ebb and flow of the crowds, plus the fact that it is a free event with no ‘gate’ or ticket sales. By the time of the Steam Parade the whole route is thronged with crowds. Lots of visitors are local, but there are many with family or Camborne connections that make special journeys. It is a family day so attracts all ages.Hotels and Guest Houses are full, often with international visitors. to view informational images please see- BBC Blue Peter - The First Trevithick Day 1984 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzHZr33CC8U Camborne Trevithick Day 2018.
